Scottish National Open Swimming Championships

Fins had four swimmers who qualified for the Scottish National Open Swimming Championships, held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool from the 26th to 28th June. The meet attracted a large entry from both sides of the border from the Shetlands down to Plymouth plus there were teams from Wakes and two teams from the Irish Republic
The four Fins’ swimmers were Millie Whytock, Lilian Blair, Jennifer Gordon, and Eva Watson. The swimmers competed in a total of 16 swims, recording three PBs, giving an improvement rate of 19%. However, things are not quite so bad as they appear.
Fins were not alone in finding it difficult to record a PB. This was apparent right across the board. I am not sure what the reason might be. It may have been that some swimmers were a bit overawed being in the company of many Commonwealth, Olympic add World medallist, or it may have been down to the condition of the pool. Not all of the top swimmers recorded a PB, even though they eventually won their event.
In terms of the Fins swimmers, it tended to be the distance events that were sometimes a good bit outside their PB, although this was not always the case,
Of the 13 non PB swims eight of the times were less than a second outside their best time, and of the remaining five swims the amount added on ranged from 1.29 seconds to 8.33 seconds.
All of the three PBs recoded were under one second and the one that sits highest in the Fins’’ rankings is actually a no change situation.
A 0.41 second PB by Millie Whytock, 13 years female, in her 50m butterfly resulted in no change to the rankings and she therefore remains in 6th place.
A 0.87 second PB by Lilian Blair, 14 years female, in her 200m individual medley, moves her from 11th to 10th place in the rankings.
A 0.72 second PB by Jennifer Gordon, 20 years female, in her 100m butterfly, moves her from 17th to 16th in the rankings.
Although she did not quite make her PB Eva Watson, 15 years female remains highly ranked in her 400m freestyle in 7th place.
Quite a strange meet in a way but it is what it is and all the swimmers can do is move on to the next event.
