This is a short report from the Scottish National Open Championships, held at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Glasgow, from Friday 30 June to Sunday 2 July 2023.

Fins had two swimmers involved, but as there are no age groups in the championships they were not expected to make any finals at 16 and 15 year old.

Grace Wilson, 16 years, had one swim which was the 50m Freestyle, which was quite extraordinary in a way. Grace recorded a PB the previous weekend at the Scottish East District Summer Sizzler in Edinburgh and she recorded exactly the same time, of 30.00 seconds, in Glasgow, not even one hundredth of a second either way.

The latest rankings from the Championships places Grace 63rd 16 year old in Scotland. This may seem quite a bit away from the top but the gap is quite small and a 1 second PB would move Grace up 41 places to 22nd and she remains in 8th place in the Fins all-time 50m freestyle rankings, and just 2.18 seconds off top spot.

The other swimmer was Jonathan Cumming, 15 years, who competed in four swims. These were the first four swims for Fins and again finished quite a bit down the field. Jonathan’s swims were the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, and the 200m freestyle.

Unfortunately, Jonathan does not appear in the Scottish rankings as he is not a Scottish National but, in comparison, his highest ranking would be in his 50m breaststroke where he would appear at 18th equal for the 15 years boys ranking. A one second improvement would see Jonathan be the equivalent of 13th in the Scottish rankings

Jonathan’s swims also affects the Fins ranking where he enters the 100m and 200m breaststroke, and the 200m freestyle in 10th place and the 50m breaststroke in 11th place.
